Factors associated with suicidal ideation: Comparisons between elderly living alone and living with others using 2017 national survey of older Koreans

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate factors associated with suicidal ideation using a data from nationwide cross-sectional Korean elderly survey and to examine differences among factors associated with elderly living alone and living with others.

Methods: Data were collected from 2017 Living profiles of older people survey. The participants were 2,552 elderly living alone and 6,045 elderly living with others. Demographic, physical and mental health related factors, and family and social factors were included. Data were analyzed using chi-square test and binominal logistic regression with the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program.

Results: Among elderly living alone, the prevalence of suicidal ideation was 10.6%, or more than two times higher than the prevalence among elderly living with others(5.1%). In both elderly living alone and living with others, the factors related to the suicidal ideation were perceived income adequacy, number of diagnosed chronic disease, depression, frequency of family contact, abused experience.

Conclusions: This finding suggests that the different approach and strategy are needed for intervention and health education to reduce suicide ideation for elderly according to the types of living arrangement.
